Developer Experience Engineer (AI)

Location: London, United Kingdom; hybrid work with office attendance twice a week

What you will do

• Own the technical direction of significant parts of the Developer Experience track and identify the biggest sources of engineering friction.
• Design and build workflows and tooling covering local development, code review, CI/CD, and production release.
• Lead AI initiatives across the software development lifecycle, including experimentation, evaluation, and safety guardrails.
• Improve developer productivity across multiple engineering teams using delivery metrics, surveys, and support data.
• Define standards, lead migrations, mentor engineers, and build consensus across teams.
• Operate the platform and tooling through a sustainable on-call rotation.

Requirements

• Software engineering background with deep expertise in at least one programming language, such as C#, Go, TypeScript, or Python.
• Experience working in a product team and shipping software to external customers.
• Strong interest in developer experience, build systems, CI/CD, internal platforms, and release engineering.
• Experience taking technical ownership across multiple teams and driving adoption without relying solely on formal authority.
• Ability to evaluate AI applications in software development with pragmatism, experimentation, and appropriate skepticism.
• Judgement to ship and iterate on practical solutions while managing long-term organizational change.

Nice to have

• Experience measuring developer productivity through DORA metrics, developer surveys, or another defensible methodology.
• Experience building AI-assisted developer tooling, including code review tools, agents, MCP servers, or evaluations.
• Experience with internal developer platforms or portals, especially Backstage.
• Community building, open-source maintainership, developer advocacy, or experience growing adoption.
• Experience with GitLab or comparable CI/CD platforms at scale, runner fleets, caching, artifacts, and build optimization.
