Staff Software Engineer (IoT)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States; employees work from the office 4 days a week.

Base salary: $144,250–$169,126 USD per year, depending on qualifications, location, and experience.

What you will do

• Own technical direction for cross-cutting initiatives across device APIs, event pipelines, device lifecycle management, transport infrastructure, and partner-facing platform capabilities.
• Lead architecture and end-to-end delivery of large initiatives, from technical design and implementation through validation and production readiness.
• Define reusable platform patterns, API contracts, event schemas, frameworks, libraries, and integration components adopted by multiple engineering teams.
• Build partner platform services including outbound command services, inbound event pipelines, authentication and authorization infrastructure, and scalable integration patterns.
• Improve cross-team technical alignment through design reviews, working groups, tech councils, and collaboration with architects and engineering managers.
• Establish standards for observability, reliability, incident response, SLAs, monitoring, and operational support while mentoring engineers across the organization.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of backend software engineering experience with Staff-level scope and impact.
• Strong backend platform expertise with RESTful and/or gRPC APIs, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, Kafka or equivalent, and shared platform design.
• Experience leading complex multi-engineer initiatives, defining service boundaries, evolving reusable platform patterns, and modernizing tightly coupled systems toward independently deployable services.
• Ability to influence experienced engineers and collaborate with architects and engineering managers across teams.
• AI-assisted development is required, including practical use for implementation, debugging, refactoring, testing, and documentation with rigorous validation and architectural review.

Nice to have

• Strong experience with .NET/C# and SQL Server.
• Experience with partner-facing APIs, external integration platforms, Kafka operations, device-oriented systems, IoT platforms, or device provisioning.
• Experience with microservice and domain-aligned architecture, observability, incident management, and production operations at scale.
• Experience with GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Model Context Protocol, architecture decision records, or department-wide engineering standards.
