Staff Software Engineer II - Confluent (Rust)

What you will do

• Drive complex, multi-quarter technical projects across multiple teams, systems, and components.
• Design and develop high-performance backend, infrastructure, and distributed systems in Rust.
• Set technical direction and influence architecture, engineering standards, and technical decisions.
• Improve scalability, reliability, performance, observability, and operational supportability.
• Mentor senior engineers and help improve engineering practices, design principles, and software architecture.
• Collaborate with engineering, product management, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; a master's degree is preferred.
• Strong professional experience developing production software with Rust.
• Experience delivering large-scale systems projects and driving Staff-level or equivalent technical initiatives for 4+ years.
• Strong background in distributed systems, backend infrastructure, cloud platforms, networking, storage, databases, or other large-scale systems.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
• Ability to lead through ambiguity, influence multiple teams, mentor senior engineers, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.

Nice to have

• Experience with Apache Kafka, streaming platforms, messaging systems, or distributed data systems.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, networking, storage, or database technologies.
• Experience contributing to open-source systems or infrastructure projects, including committer, maintainer, or core contributor experience.
• Experience with performance optimization, observability, reliability engineering, and large-scale production systems.
