Senior Software Engineer (Search Algorithms): Building and improving Elasticsearch search features and Lucene search relevance capabilities with an accent on vector search, algorithm design, and high-scale performance. Location: Spain
Salary: €67,000–€106,000 EUR base salary per year; no variable compensation component.

What you will do
- Lead initiatives in search to improve search speed, relevance, and overall search capabilities.
- Design and implement new search features, enhancements, algorithms, and data structures.
- Contribute to Lucene and search vector search capabilities.
- Investigate and fix complex bugs while improving code clarity and maintainability.
- Collaborate with distributed engineers and open-source community members on issues and pull requests.
- Write idiomatic modern Java and contribute to technical direction and vision.
Requirements
- Professional experience with search or vector databases and algorithms such as HNSW or IVF at scale.
- Strong core Java skills, including data structures, concurrency constructs, lambdas, and the standard library.
- Ability to work autonomously, own projects from technical design through delivery, and guide cross-functional initiatives.
- Experience with data storage technologies such as search, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
- Ability to collaborate asynchronously across distributed teams, projects, codebases, and functions.
- Proven experience using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining ownership of outcomes.
Nice to have
- Previous experience building with search.
- Open-source experience and familiarity with source-control workflows and continuous integration.
- Experience designing, leading, and owning cross-functional initiatives.
