TL;DR
Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Actuators & Control Systems) (aerospace embedded systems): Developing real-time firmware and closed-loop control software for rocket valves, spacecraft thrusters, thrust vector actuators, reaction wheels, and gimbals with an accent on fault-tolerant, safety-critical operation. Focus on implementing actuator control loops, interfacing with redundant motor systems and sensors, and validating firmware through hotfire campaigns, environmental testing, and in-flight diagnostics.

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; onsite

Salary: $160,000–$280,000 per year

Company

hirify.global Space develops in-space transportation vehicles and propulsion systems for orbital transport, constellation deployment, precision reentry, and missions beyond Low Earth Orbit.

What you will do

  • Develop real-time embedded firmware for rocket engine valves, thrust vector control actuators, satellite thrusters, reaction wheels, gimbals, and momentum wheels.
  • Implement closed-loop position, velocity, torque, and pressure control using encoders, LVDTs, resolvers, current sensors, and pressure sensors.
  • Interface with motor drivers and redundant actuator systems through CAN, SPI, UART, Ethernet, RS-422, and BiSS-C.
  • Design safety-critical state machines for thrust sequences, valve actuation, pressurization, and safe shutdowns.
  • Participate in hotfire campaigns, environmental testing, and in-flight diagnostics.
  • Write unit-tested, reviewable production firmware for testbeds and spacecraft.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of embedded C/C++ development experience for electromechanical control systems.
  • Experience with real-time control loops, motor commutation, actuator calibration, and servo, stepper, or brushless DC motors.
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware and software with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, and source-level debuggers.
  • Strong understanding of low-level hardware and digital interfaces, including I2C, SPI, CAN, and UART.
  • Must meet U.S. ITAR requirements as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or person eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Rocket engine controller software experience, including valve sequencing and abort logic.
  • Experience with satellite attitude control systems, reaction wheels, magnetorquers, or small thrusters.
  • Familiarity with redundant actuator architectures and fault detection and response algorithms.
  • Exposure to vacuum, temperature extremes, and radiation upsets in space environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with eligibility for stock options.
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Work focused on launch vehicles, spacecraft, and in-space transportation systems.

Hiring process

  • Application and resume review.
  • Introductory and technical phone interviews.
  • Onsite interview followed by an offer.
