Senior Coding Specialist (Healthcare)

Location: Fully remote within the United States; Virginia Beach, VA is listed.

Salary: $70,000–$85,000 annually.

What you will do

• Review electronic and scanned inpatient medical records and compare documentation with hospital-submitted codes.
• Assign and abstract diagnostic and procedural codes using applicable coding classifications and guidelines.
• Validate Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) reviews and maintain required accuracy and productivity levels.
• Document clear rationales for review decisions with appropriate authoritative references.
• Coordinate with physicians and educators on clinical input, coding decisions, and hospital coding patterns.
• Prepare provider letters explaining review findings and recommending changes to submitted codes and MS-DRGs.

Requirements

• Senior-level inpatient hospital coding experience.
• Advanced knowledge of ICD-10 codes, DRG classification, and relevant diagnosis and procedure coding guidelines.
• Experience with Encoder, Grouper, and AHA Coding Clinic or comparable industry tools.
• Ability to write clear explanations of medical facts and coding principles and communicate efficiently with physician reviewers.
• Current unrestricted RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credentials are preferred; credentials must be recognized in the jurisdiction relevant to the assigned work.
• Ability to protect patient information in compliance with HIPAA and HITECH and complete required security, conduct, and conflict-of-interest training.
