Software Engineer (Defence)

Location: Adelaide, Australia; flexible hybrid work from home/office and a 9-day fortnight may be considered. Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be able to obtain Australian Defence Security Clearance, preferably at NV1 level.

What you will do

• Participate in system architecture and technical design decisions for naval, ICT, and defence projects.
• Review code and provide technical guidance to team members.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, Engineers, and stakeholders to deliver software solutions.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex technical issues.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of development processes and engineering practices.
• Support software releases, ongoing maintenance, and sustainment activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent relevant experience; defence industry experience is preferred.
• Fluency in at least one of Java, Ada, C++, or C#.
• Experience with both procedural and object-oriented programming paradigms.
• Proficiency in applying general-purpose and framework-specific design patterns to architectural and implementation challenges.
• Experience applying configuration management principles and using Git for controlled and traceable software development.
• Understanding of agile methodologies and systems engineering practices, with the ability to apply them throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
• Strong communication, teamwork, professionalism, and ability to convey technical information clearly.
• Australian citizenship and the ability to hold or obtain Australian Defence Security Clearance, preferably NV1.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with complex software-intensive systems, military systems, or related defence technologies.
• Familiarity with the Mavlink messaging protocol.
• Proficiency in Bash, Python, Go, or TypeScript.
• Experience with DDS, IBM DOORS, Docker, or the Atlassian tool suite.
• Software development experience in Linux-based environments.
• Experience designing and implementing test automation solutions and using test automation frameworks.
• Ability to develop human-machine interfaces for interactive systems.
• Familiarity with safety-critical or large-scale enterprise systems.
• Defence industry experience.
