Director, Product Legal (Fintech)

Location: New York or San Francisco, US

Salary: $240K–$330K annual base pay, with potential equity, commission, bonuses, and other compensation.

What you will do

• Lead product legal support for Embedded Finance, Payments for Platforms, Issuing, and Lending.
• Structure complex EmFi deals and advise Product, Enterprise Sales, Financial Partnerships, Risk, Regulatory Compliance, and Engineering teams.
• Provide practical guidance on U.S. and international payments and financial services regulations.
• Draft and negotiate agreements with banks, payment service providers, card networks, and other financial partners.
• Build legal playbooks, reference documents, and approved use-case repositories for standard deal patterns.
• Support product and market launches through multi-jurisdictional regulatory assessments and cross-functional coordination.

Requirements

• JD or equivalent law degree and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 10+ years of experience in payments, complex deal structuring, and financial regulation.
• Deep knowledge of money transmission, AML/BSA, Reg E, UDAAP, card network rules, state licensing, and bank-partner/BaaS requirements.
• Experience advising product and engineering teams from ideation through launch in a fintech or financial services environment.
• Strong drafting, negotiation, and cross-functional communication skills, including communication with C-suite stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience at a top-tier law firm and in-house experience at a fintech, payments, or technology company.
• Experience with multi-jurisdictional launches and European payments regulation, including PSD2 and e-money frameworks.
• Track record of building legal playbooks and scalable internal knowledge resources.
• Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort with fast iteration and evolving priorities.
