System Design Engineer (Semiconductor Equipment)

Location: Milpitas, California, USA; onsite work on semiconductor equipment in lab and fab-like environments

Salary: $136,300–$231,700 annually

What you will do

• Perform hands-on lab and system-level testing of optical, mechanical, and electromechanical semiconductor inspection and metrology equipment.
• Troubleshoot optical systems, interferometers, vibration sensitivity, precision motion stages, actuators, electronics, sensors, and control interfaces.
• Design, execute, and document validation, characterization, and reliability tests at component, subsystem, and system levels.
• Lead root-cause investigations using field data, laboratory data, physical inspection, experimentation, and sensor logs.
• Drive corrective actions and support sustaining engineering for released products, performance excursions, reliability issues, and customer escalations.
• Collaborate with design, manufacturing, service, quality, and supplier engineering teams on hardware, firmware, and configuration changes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in optical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
• Relevant hands-on experience: 0–2 years with a PhD, 2–4 years with an MS, or 4–6 years with a BS.
• Experience working in a hands-on laboratory environment with complex hardware systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot physical systems, independently plan experiments, and execute testing and validation activities.
• Knowledge of optical systems, interferometry, vibration, semiconductor manufacturing, precision motion control, electronics, sensors, or hardware interfaces.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to document technical findings clearly.

Nice to have

• Experience with semiconductor inspection, metrology, or lithography-adjacent equipment.
• Knowledge of vibration metrics, environmental specifications, or facility interaction effects.
• Experience with sustaining or installed-base products and field issue resolution.
• Experience collaborating with manufacturing, service, or supplier engineering teams.
• Exposure to MATLAB, Python, or equivalent data-analysis tools.
