Sr. Staff Software Engineer (Fleet Orchestration)

Location: On-site in Mountain View, California, or San Francisco, California

Salary: $298,000–$368,000 USD annual base salary, plus potential annual bonus, equity incentives, and company benefits.

Waymo develops autonomous driving technology and operates a fully autonomous ride-hailing service powered by the Waymo Driver.

What you will do

• Lead and mentor a seven-member engineering team, including Senior and Staff engineers.
• Architect and evolve Fleet Orchestration Core systems that assign and execute tasks across the autonomous fleet.
• Define the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for the centralized platform managing offboard driving behavior.
• Ensure high reliability, safety, efficiency, and scalability as the fleet expands.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Operations, Data Science, SRE, and engineering teams to define requirements and deliver solutions.
• Build a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience in backend infrastructure, distributed systems, and C++.
• 5+ years of engineering management experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
• Experience driving technical strategy and architecture for complex, large-scale systems.
• Ability to build alignment across engineering and product organizations in ambiguous technical environments.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
• Knowledge of fleet management, ride-hailing or delivery logistics, supply optimization, or autonomous vehicle systems.
• Experience with Google or Waymo infrastructure such as Spanner, Flume, Borg, Protocol Buffers, Conductor, or Viceroy.
