Research Manager (Cybersecurity)

Location: Columbia, Maryland, United States; hybrid

Salary: $145,000–$193,666.67 USD per year, plus potential performance-based bonus and comprehensive benefits.

What you will do

• Provide hands-on technical leadership for the Audits and Compliance research team by prioritizing, reviewing, and championing initiatives.
• Develop audit checks and compliance plugins that detect configuration misconfigurations in customer environments.
• Extend compliance coverage to new technologies and perform original, open-ended security research.
• Share research capabilities across the organization and build relationships with customers, partners, and standards bodies.
• Mentor research engineers, support recruiting, and collaborate with research teams, program management, and product organizations.
• Manage team operations, including performance reviews, time off, HR coordination, IT resources, accountability, and team culture.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience in security research as an individual contributor.
• Experience working with international and remote teams, collaborating across multiple organizations, and driving initiatives from high-level requirements.
• Familiarity with Python, Go, SCAP, and OVAL, including the ability to conduct code reviews for quality and accuracy.
• Strong communication, organizational, logical problem-solving, research, and prioritization skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience; a master’s degree is preferred.

Nice to have

• Management or team lead experience.
• Knowledge of NIST 800-53, CIS Benchmarks, DISA STIGs, configuration controls, IT audits, and regulatory oversight.
• Experience with modern AI development tools, XSL transforms, REST APIs, regular expressions, or NASL.
• Security certifications such as CISSP, CISA, or CISM.
