Engineering Tech Lead (AI)

Location: Hybrid, based in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia

Salary: AUD $160,000–$200,000 per year, including superannuation, plus equity options

What you will do

• Set technical direction and make architectural decisions for a product team through RFCs and decision logs.
• Maintain engineering standards across code review, testing, deployment practices, and production readiness.
• Lead technical initiatives involving technical debt, platform improvements, scalability, security, and observability.
• Diagnose complex cross-service production issues and improve error handling, logging, and monitoring.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and informal guidance while serving as the technical escalation point.
• Write code, ship product features, and work across frontend, backend, and mobile systems.

Requirements

• Production software development and delivery experience at scale, typically at Senior (L3) level or above.
• Experience owning architectural decisions and technical direction for an engineering team.
• Experience establishing engineering standards for code review, testing, and deployment.
• Strong cross-service debugging skills and experience mentoring other engineers.
• Strong product mindset focused on customer outcomes and enthusiasm for agentic engineering and AI-first workflows.
• Working knowledge of TypeScript or JavaScript, React or Angular, Node.js, and AWS or a comparable cloud platform.

Nice to have

• Experience leading technical initiatives or platform work end-to-end.
• Experience writing RFCs or decision records adopted by other engineers.
• Deep expertise in MongoDB, mobile development, observability tooling, or infrastructure as code with CDK or Terraform.
• Experience in a scale-up or high-growth product environment.
