Senior Director, Intellectual Property Strategy (Biotech)

Location: Hybrid role based in Bridgewater, New Jersey or San Diego, California, with onsite work 3+ days per week.

Salary: $247,000–$337,500 annual

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end global IP strategy for biologic patent portfolios, including protein therapeutics, gene therapy, and antisense oligonucleotide programs.
• Draft, file, and prosecute strategic patent applications while directing internal IP staff and outside counsel.
• Prepare and coordinate patent disputes, including European oppositions and appeals, US IPRs and PGRs, and litigation in the US, Europe, and China.
• Drive competitor intelligence, freedom-to-operate analyses, portfolio risk assessment, and identification of coverage gaps and whitespace opportunities.
• Advise R&D, business development, product, and executive teams on IP matters, due diligence, disclosures, and strategic decision-making.
• Manage or mentor IP team members and oversee globally coordinated outside-counsel work.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in a life science discipline and J.D. from an accredited US law school.
• Member in good standing of a US State Bar and registered to practice before the USPTO.
• 15+ years of patent experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sector, including significant in-house experience.
• Deep expertise in patent prosecution strategy involving viral gene therapy, protein therapeutics, and antisense oligonucleotide technologies.
• Significant experience with patent oppositions, IPRs, PGRs, and/or litigation, alongside a strong understanding of global patent systems.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to prepare patent applications and USPTO responses.
