Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Remote in the United States; currently not hiring in Hawaii

Salary: $192,000–$240,000 in starting total cash, including base salary; equity offered and no bonus for this role

What you will do

• Build scalable systems for the Marketplace Health Engine to improve marketplace efficiency, provider utilization, and patient access.
• Design and deliver backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems.
• Drive technical strategy and influence engineering decisions across the Marketplace organization.
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Data, and Operations to deliver measurable business outcomes.
• Lead projects from discovery and design through implementation, launch, and post-launch support.
• Mentor engineers while remaining hands-on in software development.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building scalable distributed systems.
• Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams and influencing strategy without direct authority.
• Experience designing backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems; AWS experience is preferred.
• Experience solving complex marketplace, platform, or large-scale operational problems with measurable impact.
• Strong communication skills for aligning technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Must be based in the United States; Hawaii is currently excluded.

Nice to have

• Startup experience.
• Experience developing SaaS applications with AWS.
• On-call experience and the ability to independently investigate and resolve complex issues.
• Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and Kafka.
• Experience building products with high reliability or accuracy requirements.
