Print Desk Designer (Contract)

Location: Washington, D.C., newsroom or remote from another location in the United States. The schedule is 37.5 hours per week and typically includes Eastern Time evening shifts and at least one weekend day.

Salary: $7,200–$9,500 per month, depending on skills, experience, qualifications, and contract duration.

What you will do

• Design pages and story packages for daily and weekly print editions, themed sections, and special editions.
• Adapt edited text, photography, and graphics using content management systems and design tools.
• Collaborate with print editors, designers, and production teams to deliver cohesive visual storytelling.
• Maintain accuracy, appropriate tone, visual hierarchy, and brand consistency across print products.
• Contribute ideas to improve print workflows, presentation, and the reader experience.
• Balance multiple assignments and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.

Requirements

• Portfolio demonstrating excellence in print news or magazine design.
• Strong typography, layout, visual storytelling, and news judgment skills.
• Understanding of how design affects the reader experience.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
• Comfort learning new technologies and adapting to production workflows.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Nice to have

• Experience with Méthode, Roxen, and Adobe Creative Suite.
