Staff AI Engineer/Scientist (Explainable AI)

Location: Austin, Texas, or Reston, Virginia, United States; must reside near one of these locations and work 3 days per week in office.

What you will do

• Design and build capabilities that explain why models and agents produced outputs, including the influence of training data, retrieved documents, tools, interactions, and internal model mechanisms.
• Enable users to challenge AI outputs, capture corrective feedback, and convert contested results into improvement data.
• Develop solutions for hallucination detection and mitigation and continual-learning agents.
• Translate current AI research into prototypes and production-grade features.
• Contribute across model development, inference, deployment, monitoring, and production performance optimization.
• Partner with product, design, and customer-facing teams to deliver AI capabilities for real workflows.

Requirements

• 5–8+ years of experience in AI engineering, AI research, AI science, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Strong background in machine learning and modern AI systems, including LLMs, VLMs, agent frameworks, RAG, or adjacent applied ML systems.
• Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals, including testing, code review, CI/CD, debugging, and performance analysis.
• Ability to move between research and engineering, design experiments, and evaluate ambiguous technical tradeoffs.
• Fluency with AI coding assistants and modern developer workflows.
• Must reside near Austin, TX, or Reston, VA, and be able to work 3 days per week in office; applicants must meet U.S. work authorization or required government authorization conditions.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in computer science, machine learning, AI, statistics, or a related field.
• Original technical work through publications, patents, open-source contributions, or research that influenced shipped systems.
• Experience with vLLM, SGLang, model serving optimization, APIs/SDKs, Kubernetes, GitOps, GPU workloads, and custom accelerator kernels.
• Experience with relational and vector databases, RAG architectures, experiment tracking, model and data versioning, evaluation pipelines, and AI observability.
