Senior Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Chicago, United States

Annual base salary: $175,000–$275,000, plus an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Build and maintain systems for trade management, trade and order processing, and platform services.
• Design, model, and program solutions using a variety of languages and technologies.
• Develop both greenfield systems and improvements to legacy code.
• Drive projects from initiation through completion while understanding the underlying business requirements.
• Promote modern technologies and engineering best practices, including rapid deployment, feedback, automated testing, and loosely coupled service architectures.
• Provide on-call support and collaborate with other developers when needed.

Requirements

• Multiple years of server-side software development experience.
• Strong understanding of microservice architectures and the CAP theorem.
• Confident JVM knowledge and experience with modern programming languages such as Java, Python, or Clojure.
• Experience with domain-driven design, domain modeling, functional programming paradigms, and type theory.
• Exposure to Kubernetes, Docker, Linux, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Git, SQL, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
• Ability to focus on testing, reliability, scalability, maintainability, and ownership of outcomes when using AI coding assistants.

Nice to have

• Experience with Airflow or other Python-based workflow orchestration tools.
• Exposure to agentic frameworks or MCP server development.
• Knowledge of financial concepts, exchange trading, or physical energy trading.
