TL;DR
Electronic Systems Physicist – Laser-Plasma Diagnostics (FPGA/Detector Electronics): Establishing and leading the electronics development stream for particle and radiation diagnostics used in ultrashort-pulse laser-matter interaction experiments, with an accent on detector front-ends, high-speed readout, triggering, timing, and FPGA firmware. Focus on designing reliable camera and detector systems for high-field environments, integrating acquisition and control software, and developing diagnostics toward higher repetition rates and deployable systems.

Location: Munich, Germany

Company

hirify.global is a fusion energy startup founded in 2019, developing clean energy through laser-driven fusion and bringing together scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs in Munich and Colorado.

What you will do

  • Establish and lead the electronics development stream for advanced particle and radiation diagnostics.
  • Develop detector and camera systems for ion, electron, neutron, and X/gamma-ray measurements.
  • Design the full electronics chain, including sensor front-ends, high-speed readout, triggering, timing, FPGA firmware, and host-side acquisition and control software.
  • Make and execute key technical decisions as the first dedicated electronics specialist in the diagnostics team.
  • Develop next-generation systems for harsh experimental environments, higher repetition rates, and reactor-relevant conditions.
  • Support the transition of diagnostics from experimental prototypes to deployable, industry-ready systems.

Requirements

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience developing scientific or industrial electronic systems.
  • Experience developing FPGA firmware in VHDL or Verilog, including vendor toolchains, IP integration, and timing closure.
  • Practical experience with image sensor or detector readout, LVDS/SLVS interfaces, sensor configuration, and control.
  • Experience with high-speed digital signalling, signal integrity, power delivery, and laboratory debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and JTAG tools.
  • Professional working proficiency in English and the ability to work independently in laboratory and remote deployment settings.

Nice to have

  • Experience with detector or DAQ electronics in accelerator, laser, fusion, or space research facilities.
  • Experience mitigating electromagnetic pulse and interference effects in pulsed-power or high-field environments.
  • Experience with electronics for long operational lifetimes in ionising environments.
  • Familiarity with fibre-optic data and timing distribution, gated imaging, shot-synchronised acquisition, or SoC-based designs.
  • German language skills and experience deploying self-contained instruments at host facilities.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on a purpose-driven fusion energy mission alongside scientists and entrepreneurs.
  • Public transport subsidy and phone bill reimbursement.
  • Wellpass or complimentary private health insurance and a company pension plan.
  • Professional learning and development budget.
  • Relocation support, 30 days of vacation, and an additional half day on 24 and 31 December.
  • Modern central Munich office, healthy snacks, and regular team events.
