TL;DR
Staff Engineer, Mechanical & Actuated Systems (R5293) (autonomous aircraft): Designing and developing complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, and hydro-mechanical mechanisms for Shield AI's autonomous UAV products with an accent on CAD design, kinematic analysis, structural analysis, and FEA. Focus on architecting actuated systems, prototyping and testing mechanisms, integrating designs into aircraft platforms, and supporting ground and flight testing.

Location: Dallas, Texas; on-site

What you will do

  • Design complex electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical mechanisms for autonomous aircraft.
  • Own the complete mechanical design process from concept and CAD through analysis, tolerance stack-ups, material selection, and drawing release.
  • Architect and develop actuated systems including uplocks, doors, flight controls, landing gear, and wing-fold mechanisms.
  • Perform kinematic, structural, and preliminary finite element analyses.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate mechanisms for functionality, performance, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with electrical, avionics, hydraulics, flight controls, and propulsion teams during integration and testing.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical or mechanism design.
  • Strong CAD skills; NX is preferred.
  • Experience with kinematic analysis and optimization, structural calculations, and finite element methods, including modal, nonlinear, linear, buckling, and fatigue analysis.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, materials selection, alloys, heat treatments, allowables, and finishes.
  • Ability to work independently in fast-paced, cross-functional teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience with UAVs, aircraft, or robotic systems.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical actuators.
  • Experience with FMEA, DOE, root cause analysis, or hands-on machine shop and mechanic work.
  • Experience with RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-810, structural testing, or actuated mechanism testing.
  • Background in startup, R&D, or defense innovation environments.
