TL;DR
Staff Mechanical Design Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and developing complex mechanical and actuation systems for Seaglider vehicles and test platforms with an accent on mechanism architecture, kinematic systems, production-ready design, and hands-on validation. Focus on analyzing and integrating linkages, transmissions, motors, sensors, and control systems while driving root-cause investigations, DFMA, tolerance analysis, and scale-up from prototype to production.

Location: North Kingstown, Rhode Island, USA

Company

hirify.global is developing Seagliders, wing-in-ground-effect vehicles designed to provide fast, affordable, and sustainable regional transportation between coastal cities.

What you will do

  • Own the design and development of mechanical and actuation systems for hydrofoil retraction, control surfaces, and other motion-critical vehicle subsystems.
  • Define architectures for mechanisms involving linkages, gear trains, transmissions, motors, hinges, and integrated motion systems.
  • Design, build, and iterate on test assets, fixtures, rigs, and demonstrators for rapid validation.
  • Translate vehicle requirements into detailed designs while balancing performance, reliability, manufacturability, and safety.
  • Lead kinematic, dynamic, structural, hand-calculation, and FEA activities, including trade studies and root-cause investigations.
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, avionics, software, and test engineers; establish mechanical design, DFMA, GD&T, tolerance-analysis, and system-integration practices.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing complex mechanical systems with linkages, gear trains, transmissions, hinges, or similar kinematic mechanisms.
  • Deep knowledge of motors, gearboxes, servo motors, BLDC systems, and industrial motion control.
  • Advanced CAD proficiency, preferably NX, including large assemblies and production-ready components.
  • Strong engineering analysis skills covering kinematics, force and torque estimation, tolerance analysis, structural evaluation, and FEA.
  • Hands-on experience building, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems in laboratory or field environments.
  • Experience driving multidisciplinary projects from concept through validation and iteration, with knowledge of DFMA, GD&T, and tolerance stack-ups.

Nice to have

  • Experience mentoring engineers and establishing best practices for mechanical teams.
  • Experience in a fast-paced startup environment.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment focused on innovation and practical execution.
  • Competitive compensation with an equity incentive plan.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance with 100% of premiums covered.
  • 401(k) with company matching, flexible time off, paid parental leave, and company-wide holiday breaks.
  • Relocation packages are available for employees moving to join the team.
  • Free catered lunches and learning and professional development opportunities.
