Senior Software Engineer (Autonomous Driving)

Location: On-site in Mountain View, California; San Francisco, California; or New York City, New York. The role is also described as hybrid.

Salary: $213,000–$263,000 USD gross annual base salary, plus discretionary annual bonus, equity incentives, and company benefits.

What you will do

• Build infrastructure for a virtual driver's test that evaluates the Waymo Driver's driving capabilities.
• Design, implement, and operate scalable simulation data pipelines and evaluation workflows.
• Improve the quality of individual simulations and end-to-end simulation processes.
• Assess whether virtual driver's test results predict real-world driving behavior.
• Apply machine learning models to identify important scenarios and simulation results, with opportunities to contribute to model development.

Requirements

• 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience, or a quantitative PhD with 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in C++ and familiarity with Python and SQL.
• Interest in autonomous driving, simulation, and evaluation.
• Ability to work in a quantitative or quality-focused engineering environment involving experiments, data analysis, and production-system reliability.

Nice to have

• 7+ years of industry experience or 3+ years of postdoctoral experience.
• Technical leadership experience involving hypothesis development, experiment design, data processing, and synthesizing conclusions.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems at FAANG scale.
