Staff Software Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Hybrid work from an hirify.global office in Mountain View, San Francisco, or Pittsburgh, with at least 3 office days per week.

Salary: $189,000–$303,000 per year for Mountain View or San Francisco; $171,000–$273,000 per year for Pittsburgh. Additional annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits are available.

What you will do

• Design complex systems and partner with software, hardware, infrastructure, product, design, and operations teams.
• Build and maintain micro-backend architecture in AWS for monitoring and managing the commercial autonomous vehicle fleet.
• Design and implement fleet management and vehicle communication systems.
• Establish highly available and reliable technology and infrastructure for products operating at scale.
• Contribute to mentorship, feedback, collaboration, and engineering excellence across the team.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience building backend services.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience with REST, gRPC, and GraphQL communication protocols.
• Experience building large-scale, highly concurrent, high-throughput, safety-critical backend services.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical specifications and cross-functional collaboration.
• Current authorization to work lawfully in the United States is required; visa sponsorship may be required as part of the application process.

Nice to have

• Experience with embedded autonomous vehicle development, IoT, or real-time device-to-cloud communication.
• Experience with feature flags, A/B testing, canary releases, observability, and monitoring of safety-critical systems.
• Experience with fleet management for robots, vehicles, or aerial drones.
• Experience delivering customer-facing software to production and working with safety- or mission-critical applications.
