Director/Principal Engineer, Data & AI Platform (AI)

Location: Milpitas, California, United States

Salary: USD 225,000–300,000 per year, plus potential bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own the data platform as an internal product with a roadmap measured by adoption, trust, and time-to-answer.
• Build and operate production software, shared libraries, interfaces, primitives, tests, CI, and backward-compatible platform capabilities.
• Deliver governed AI and ML capabilities including anomaly detection, forecasting, segmentation, and natural-language queries over trusted data.
• Design safe interfaces for AI tools and agents, including MCP or comparable tool-callable access with permission and query-safety controls.
• Resolve identity, referential integrity, consistency, and access-control challenges across DynamoDB, Databricks, Oracle EBS, Amplitude, and Klaviyo.
• Define the semantic and metric layer, catalog, data product contracts, metadata, lineage, ownership, quality, freshness, and access standards.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data engineering or data platform roles, including production ownership of systems used by multiple teams.
• Production experience with LLM systems, retrieval and natural-language interfaces over structured data, evaluation, guardrails, monitoring, and cost controls.
• Experience building ML platform capabilities covering feature definition, training and serving, evaluation, drift, and quality monitoring.
• Production experience with Databricks or a comparable lakehouse platform, including Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, medallion architecture, metadata, lineage, and governance.
• Strong experience with heterogeneous data integration, enterprise data architecture, data contracts, semantic modeling, AWS data services, SQL, and Python or another general-purpose language.
• Track record of driving adoption of platform capabilities across teams without direct authority.

Nice to have

• Experience with Collibra, Atlan, or similar data catalog and governance tools.
• Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive data environments.
• Experience replacing dashboard and reporting sprawl with governed self-service.
• Experience with Oracle EBS, Amplitude, Klaviyo, or similar enterprise and product-analytics sources.
