TL;DR
Software Engineer, Networking & OS (Embedded Linux/UAS): Designing and optimizing resilient Layer 2/Layer 3 network infrastructure for V-BAT unmanned aerial systems with an accent on secure, low-latency communication across lossy radio and satellite links. Focus on implementing Linux networking features, building traffic shaping and link failover mechanisms, and validating end-to-end performance in hardware-in-the-loop labs and flight tests.

Location: Dallas, Texas. Workplace: On-site.

Company

Develops the V-BAT unmanned aerial system for operation in contested, GNSS-denied airspace.

What you will do

  • Design and build resilient Layer 2 and Layer 3 network topologies for V-BAT mission profiles, including device isolation, dynamic traffic management, and multi-link traffic transmission.
  • Implement networking features on embedded Linux, including custom routing, TUN/TAP interfaces, user-space tunnels, and socket-level applications.
  • Build bandwidth-optimized, low-latency communication paths over lossy or constrained radio and satellite links.
  • Develop production-grade C, C++, or Python software for software-defined network interfaces, traffic shaping, and link failover.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, hardware engineers, and field operators to validate network performance in hardware-in-the-loop labs and flight tests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 4+ years, or PhD with 2+ years.
  • Strong proficiency writing C, C++, or Python in a Linux environment, with experience shipping software that directly interacts with the OS networking stack.
  • Deep knowledge of Linux networking fundamentals, including netlink, IP routes and tables, iptables/nftables, TUN/TAP interfaces, network namespaces, and socket programming.
  • Understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, custom routing protocols, VLAN tagging, QoS and traffic management, and VPN or tunneling mechanisms such as OpenVPN, GRE, IPsec, or custom user-space tunnels.
  • Practical experience troubleshooting network degradation with tcpdump, Wireshark, iproute2, and iperf in lossy, high-latency, or bandwidth-constrained environments.
  • Proven record of shipping products, navigating development cycles, overcoming obstacles, and delivering high-quality solutions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.

Nice to have

  • Experience developing embedded Linux networking applications with Yocto or OS-level customization tools.
  • Experience working with RF and hardware engineers to design protocols and topologies for novel radio networks.
  • Experience architecting network solutions for robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or edge-computing hardware.
  • Familiarity with network security, public key infrastructure, and cryptographic tunnels in embedded systems.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work includes collaboration across software engineering, hardware engineering, and field operations.
  • Network performance is validated in hardware-in-the-loop laboratories and flight-test environments.
  • Role supports systems operating in challenging, contested, and GNSS-denied environments.
