TL;DR
Senior Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineer (Nuclear Fuel Recycling): Performing criticality safety evaluations and developing the nuclear criticality safety basis and program for a first-of-a-kind used nuclear fuel recycling facility with an accent on subcriticality analysis, code validation, and regulatory compliance. Focus on designing controlled parameters, criticality accident alarm and emergency response systems, and supporting safety basis development and NRC licensing.

Location: Santa Clara, California, or remote within the United States. Remote employees must travel to the Santa Clara headquarters twice per quarter based on business or team needs, and must work onsite there for the first two weeks of onboarding. Applicants must meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable U.S. export control laws.

Salary: $135,000–$175,000 per year

What you will do

  • Identify and evaluate nuclear criticality safety hazards for fuel cycle facilities.
  • Perform criticality safety evaluations demonstrating subcriticality under normal and credible abnormal conditions.
  • Develop criticality code validation reports and demonstrate compliance with the double-contingency principle.
  • Document criticality hazard analyses, evaluations, and supporting technical information.
  • Develop controlled parameters, methodologies, management measures, criticality accident alarm systems, and inadvertent criticality emergency response plans.
  • Support safety basis development, regulatory compliance, and licensing efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience performing criticality safety evaluations as part of a nuclear facility safety basis.
  • Knowledge of nuclear science, criticality physics, chemistry, fuel cycle processes, accident scenarios, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with Attila4MC, MCNP, SCALE, and/or Serpent codes and modules.
  • Familiarity with critical experiments, criticality-specific standards, industry practices, and relevant NUREG and NRC guidance.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of used nuclear fuel recycling technologies.
  • 10 or more years of experience performing criticality safety evaluations for an NRC-licensed fuel cycle facility.
  • Knowledge of structural design, analysis, and construction.
