Staff Nuclear Engineer (Advanced Microreactors): Leading nuclear design and analysis for the Kaleidos portable microreactor with an accent on reactor physics, neutron and radiation transport, shielding, safety analysis, and multidisciplinary engineering integration. Focus on developing high-fidelity models, translating analytical results into reactor design decisions, supporting testing and regulatory evaluations, and establishing rigorous verification and validation practices.

Location: 100% onsite at hirify.global’s headquarters in El Segundo, California, United States

Salary: $185,000–$225,000 per year, plus equity

Company

hirify.global is a startup developing mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors, including the 1-megawatt Kaleidos reactor for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases.

What you will do

  • Provide technical leadership across reactor physics, core performance, neutron and radiation transport, shielding, dose and activation, thermal-hydraulics, safety analysis, instrumentation and controls, and reactor operations.
  • Own nuclear engineering projects from requirements definition and design trades through model development, analysis, technical review, testing, and final documentation.
  • Develop, review, and improve high-fidelity transport models for reactor design, safety, testing, and regulatory evaluations.
  • Translate analytical results into requirements and design decisions affecting the core, shielding, control systems, fluid systems, structures, and surrounding hardware.
  • Lead multidisciplinary trades with reactor systems, thermal, mechanical, electrical, test, operations, safety, and regulatory teams.
  • Establish verification and validation, peer review, configuration control, uncertainty evaluation, technical documentation, and analytical methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in reactor design, analysis, testing, licensing, safety, or operations.
  • Deep knowledge of neutron transport theory, Monte Carlo simulation, nuclear data, statistical convergence, criticality, reactivity, depletion, power distribution, shutdown margin, and uncertainty analysis.
  • Professional experience developing and applying MCNP, OpenMC, or comparable neutron and radiation transport models.
  • Experience translating analysis into reactor design decisions, technical requirements, safety conclusions, or regulatory documentation.
  • Ability to work independently, communicate complex technical conclusions, and drive multidisciplinary problems through closure.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with advanced reactors, microreactors, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, or first-of-a-kind nuclear systems.
  • Experience with SCALE, Serpent, Shift, Griffin, MOOSE-based applications, Python, or coupled multiphysics analyses.
  • Familiarity with DOE authorization, NRC licensing, nuclear industry codes and standards, or regulatory safety analysis.
  • Experience with reactor testing, commissioning, startup, mentoring, or technical review.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with substantial incentive stock eligibility.
  • Medical, vision, dental, One Medical, FSA/HSA, commuter, life, accident, hospital, and critical illness benefits.
  • Eight weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, with additional paid pregnancy leave for California employees.
  • Flexible PTO, a remote workday allocation, daily catered lunch, snacks, drinks, and team events.
  • Mission-driven engineering environment with extended hours when needed and in-person collaboration at the El Segundo headquarters.
