Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Remote within or near approved metro areas in the United States, Canada, and Mexico; occasional in-person attendance is required.

Salary: $171,000–$267,000 in California; $141,000–$254,000 in the United States outside California; CAD 179,000–228,500 in Canada.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for the Everand backend through design documents, architecture reviews, and concrete solutions to ambiguous product requirements.
• Own platform reliability and health across staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, costs, observability, SLOs, metrics, and alerts.
• Build scalable, resilient, and observable systems supporting discoverability, personalization, experimentation, and core reading and listening journeys.
• Modernize legacy systems and remove technical debt to improve engineering velocity and scalability.
• Represent backend engineering in cross-team planning and collaborate with Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML partners.
• Raise engineering standards through code review, mentorship, pairing, testing, operations, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• Significant backend engineering experience building and scaling distributed systems.
• Production coding experience in at least one modern backend language: Ruby, Scala, Go, or Python.
• Strong understanding of reliability, observability, SLOs, metrics, alerting, and distributed-system debugging.
• Experience setting architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and leading large-scale migrations or modernization efforts.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with senior product, design, analytics, web, mobile, and ML partners.
• Primary residence must be in or near an approved hirify.global employment location in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

Nice to have

• Strong Ruby coding ability.
• Experience improving reliability, latency, or throughput in large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience with recommendation or feed systems alongside ML teams.
• Familiarity with experimentation or feature-flagging platforms.
