TL;DR
Senior Data Scientist (Cancer Genomics): Developing methods and tools to monitor the performance of an in-production multi-cancer classifier using population-scale genomic and clinical datasets with an accent on cancer biology, DNA methylation, genomics, and statistical modeling. Focus on identifying performance deviations, building predictive models, and translating rigorous machine learning analyses into production-ready cancer detection systems.

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States. Hybrid work is available from the hirify.global office or home, with at least 40% or 16 hours of each work week onsite; the schedule may require more onsite time depending on team and business needs. Tuesdays and Thursdays are key onsite days at the Menlo Park campus.

  • Identify empirical trends and communicate scientific findings across teams.
  • Integrate cancer biology, DNA methylation, genomics, epidemiology, and statistics to model expected test performance.
  • Develop methods and tools to monitor the output of an in-production multi-cancer classifier and detect performance deviations.
  • Collaborate with machine learning, software engineering, clinical, laboratory operations, research, and product development teams.
  • Create and communicate rigorous scientific analyses.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computational Biology, Physics, Bioengineering, Cancer Genomics, Statistics, Biochemistry, or a related field, plus 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with large-scale omics datasets in R or Python.
  • Experience with NGS data processing, statistical modeling, and machine learning frameworks in a clinical setting.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently across interdisciplinary environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform rigorous and detail-oriented work.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of cancer epigenetics, cancer biology, tumor genetics, and molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis.
  • Experience with traditional machine learning and modern AI techniques.
  • Scientific contributions such as publications, tools, datasets, patents, or conference presentations.
  • Experience with Linux, Git, and reproducible data science pipelines.
  • Interest in translating research innovations into production-ready systems.

Culture & Benefits

  • Cross-functional collaboration across research, clinical, engineering, laboratory operations, and product teams.
  • Flexible work arrangement combining home and office work within the onsite policy.
  • Flexible time off or vacation.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Medical, dental, vision coverage, and mindfulness programs.
