Senior Data Engineer (Biotechnology)

Location: On-site in RTP, North Carolina, Monday through Friday; participation in an on-call rotation with occasional weekend or holiday support may be required.

Annual base pay: $118,000–$157,000, plus potential bonus or incentives.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and maintain data pipelines integrating laboratory instruments, sequencers, automation systems, robotics platforms, databases, APIs, and file-based sources.
• Own data pipelines, models, and infrastructure from design through production operation.
• Define data architecture, modeling standards, transformation patterns, orchestration, monitoring, and alerting.
• Develop advanced SQL and transformation logic to cleanse, standardize, and model instrument and production data.
• Deliver trusted datasets for dashboards, analytics, troubleshooting, process monitoring, and AI-enabled workflows.
• Partner with systems engineering, lab operations, data science, and automation engineering; mentor junior engineers and improve engineering standards.

Requirements

• BS/BA degree with 5+ years or Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development.
• Advanced SQL skills, including performance optimization and complex transformation logic.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Rust, C++, or a similar programming language.
• Understanding of ETL/ELT pipeline design, relational databases, data modeling, and structured or semi-structured data.
• Ability to own infrastructure end to end, investigate complex technical problems, communicate clearly, and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work on-site in RTP, North Carolina, Monday through Friday, including participation in on-call support.

Nice to have

• Experience with Airflow, dbt, or comparable orchestration and transformation tools.
• Experience with AWS S3, Redshift, Glue, Snowflake, or comparable cloud data platforms and warehouses.
• Experience with AI or agentic tooling, semantic data modeling, data lineage, and automated data quality testing.
• Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical projects, or setting engineering standards.
• Exposure to clinical laboratory operations, diagnostics, biotechnology, manufacturing, statistical methods, or process analytics.
