Senior and Staff Software Engineers (Embedded Robotics)

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid

Develops and deploys autonomous systems for heavy construction equipment, improving job-site safety and accelerating critical infrastructure projects.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and own major areas of the embedded safety controller connecting the autonomy system with heavy machinery.
• Build safety-critical software for base-machine control, system health monitoring, strict isolation, and deterministic real-time execution.
• Develop across the embedded stack, including drivers, RTOS bring-up, communications, middleware, applications, and system integration.
• Interface with multiple machinery types and manufacturers and design flexible, portable abstractions.
• Extend the platform to field devices for power management, sensor cleaning, lighting, and reliable operation in harsh conditions.
• Lead projects, drive design decisions, and collaborate across hardware, autonomy, and platform teams.

Requirements

• Experience building and shipping embedded systems in robotics, automotive, drones, or other safety-critical contexts.
• Strong systems programming skills in C++ or Rust, plus fluency in Python for scripting and analysis.
• Experience developing software for resource-constrained systems with real-time requirements.
• Ability to develop, automate, and debug across the hardware/software boundary.
• Track record of leading projects and working effectively across technical teams.

Nice to have

• Production or embedded Rust experience.
• Familiarity with CAN, Ethernet, J1939, and other automotive or industrial networking protocols.
• Experience with functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or DO-178C.
