Mechanical Design Engineer (Wireless Optical Communication)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; hybrid

Salary: $160,000–$210,000 annual base salary, plus bonus, equity, and benefits

What you will do

• Design, model, fabricate, and validate mechanical components for next-generation wireless optical communication terminals.
• Develop mechanical solutions for environmental performance, materials selection, and thermal management.
• Solve thermo-mechanical system and integrated-circuit packaging challenges for production.
• Integrate custom silicon photonics, opto-mechanical assemblies, and precision steering mechanisms.
• Drive reliability and quality testing for Telcordia outdoor equipment, including thermal, shock, and vibration testing.
• Support manufacturing teams and partners in ramping hardware to production quantities.

Requirements

• BS in Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years of relevant experience, or an Engineering degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.
• 3+ years of experience with mainstream 3D mechanical CAD or simulation software, including proficiency in SolidWorks or an equivalent tool.
• 3+ years of experience creating 3D mechanical designs and drawings.
• Experience with GD&T, finite-element analysis for thermally induced stresses and structural modes, hardware specifications, BOM management, and document control.
• Strong analytical, written, and verbal presentation skills, with close attention to detail.
• Self-driven, humble, and eager to learn.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics with 6+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience designing lightweight, compact, high-accuracy pointing mechanisms with design-for-manufacturing considerations.
• Experience with MES, Arena or Agile PLM, volume-production tooling and processes, and contract manufacturers.
• Experience with reliability testing, vibration and waterproof testing, seals, injection-molded plastics, or die-cast metals.
• Experience with sensors and actuators, CNC machining, soldering, opto-mechanical integration, advanced thermal management, photonic integrated-circuit packaging, outdoor products, or startup environments.
