TL;DR
Junior Material Scientist (Polymer Science and Additive Manufacturing): Studying polymer behavior in high-temperature industrial 3D printing and translating validated experimental findings into process-control software with an accent on extrusion, rheology, crystallinity, and layer welding. Focus on designing experiments, building statistical models from self-collected data, improving test workflows, and scaling material research across supported polymers.

Location: On-site in MontrΓ©al, Quebec, Canada

Company

A venture capital-backed additive manufacturing company developing hardware, software, and materials for high-performance 3D printing.

What you will do

  • Operate high-temperature industrial 3D printers and develop expert-level knowledge of their operation.
  • Study polymer extrusion behavior, including die swell, viscoelasticity, layer welding, and crystallinity formation.
  • Design and run experiments to quantify the phenomena that drive print quality.
  • Work with software engineers to convert validated hypotheses into process-control software.
  • Develop testing workflows, evaluate software improvements, and scale validated methods across supported materials.
  • Help train technicians to expand experimentation across the target material range.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of polymer behavior during extrusion processing.
  • Theoretical knowledge of polymer rheology, extrusion processing, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with 3D printing, preferably FFF/FDM.
  • Experience with high-temperature performance polymers such as Ultem 9085, Ultem 1010, PEEK, or PEKK-A.
  • Scientific experience using experimental methods and statistical models based on self-collected datasets.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration among polymer scientists, mechanical engineers, and software engineers.
  • Opportunity to contribute to tools that make printed parts faster, stronger, and more reliable.
  • AI-supported tools may be used during parts of the hiring process, with the option to request human review after an automated rejection.
  • Accommodation is available during the application process upon request.
