Patent Attorney (Semiconductor): Developing and managing a global patent portfolio for computational lithography, metrology, and inspection with an accent on patent prosecution, product clearance, and intellectual property risk analysis. Location: On-site in San Jose, California, United States; a flexible workplace arrangement may allow remote work up to two days per week.

Salary: $160,125–$240,188 gross annual base salary.

What you will do

  • Develop and manage a global patent portfolio for computational lithography, metrology, and inspection.
  • Assess invention disclosures, interview inventors, lead invention review meetings, and recommend portfolio maintenance strategies.
  • Manage outside counsel in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, petitions, appeals, and other submissions.
  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, product clearance, infringement, and broader IP risk analyses.
  • Advise engineering, business, and management stakeholders on IP strategy, protection opportunities, and risk mitigation.
  • Provide employee training on intellectual property matters and occasionally support patent licensing activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical sciences, such as electrical or mechanical engineering, systems and controls, physics, materials science, or optics.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications and providing patentability, non-infringement, and risk opinions.
  • License to practice before the United States Patent Office and authorization to practice law in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia. California admission is preferred.
  • Experience with physics, optics, electron optics, and/or semiconductor processing is strongly preferred.
  • Strong English communication skills for reading, writing, and discussing complex legal and technical matters.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, at least one IP database, and online research tools; occasional domestic and international travel is required.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in physics with optics experience.
  • Prior in-house patent experience and experience developing strategy with engineers and senior management.
  • Experience planning and directing administrative staff supporting IP work.
