Senior Patent Attorney (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Lincolnshire, Illinois; 3 days in the office and 2 days remote

Salary: $156,960–$235,440 annual, plus a target annual cash incentive equal to 20% of base pay

What you will do

• Manage outside patent counsel and help develop a strategically and commercially relevant worldwide patent portfolio.
• Prepare and prosecute patents in-house as needed.
• Advise engineering, product, and other internal stakeholders on intellectual property risks, tradeoffs, and protection strategies.
• Work with engineers and product teams to identify inventive concepts and shape them into commercially relevant patent filings.
• Assess invention disclosures and portfolio assets to guide filing scope, timing, and alternative protection decisions.
• Use AI-assisted tools for invention intake, prior art analysis, portfolio classification, and workflow efficiency.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
• Admission to at least one U.S. state bar and registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are required.
• At least 4 years of relevant legal experience, including specialized patent law experience, in-house or at a law firm.
• Strong patent preparation, prosecution, business judgment, and product awareness.
• Ability to explain intellectual property risks and options in clear, practical, business-oriented language.

Nice to have

• Prior engineering experience.
• Experience with AI-enabled legal or technical tools.
• Interest in emerging technologies, including AI and data-driven systems.
• Seven years of combined legal education and professional experience.
