Principal Electrical Systems Design Engineer (Defense)

Location: Torrance, California, United States. The role requires US citizenship to obtain a US clearance and compliance with ITAR eligibility requirements.

Salary: $178,600–$215,800 USD annually for roles hired in California.

What you will do

• Develop system-level power budgets and coordinate requirements with subsystem design teams.
• Lead the integration of power electronics subsystems for large-scale high-power microwave phased arrays from prototyping through production.
• Architect electrical systems covering power distribution, communications, safety, and related system needs.
• Define technical requirements, specifications, and architecture for high-power microwave components and systems.
• Design, prototype, wire, test, and debug high-voltage power electronics and phased-array systems.
• Coordinate component design, testing, and evaluation with internal teams and external suppliers.

Requirements

• Degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, or electrical engineering.
• 8+ years of industry experience, preferably across the full product lifecycle from concept to field deployment; advanced degrees may substitute for experience.
• Experience with technical communication, defending engineering decisions, and written and verbal communication.
• Knowledge of Jira and Scrum best practices.
• US citizenship is required to obtain a US clearance; ITAR eligibility or the ability to obtain required authorizations is required.
• Ability to travel occasionally.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-voltage power distribution, battery systems, three-phase AC, and high-voltage DC power subsystems.
• Familiarity with CAN, Ethernet, and other communication protocols for phased-array systems.
• Knowledge of MIL-STD and IEC standards, PCB schematic design and testing, and high-voltage harness design.
• Experience with DFMEA and aerospace, defense, directed-energy, aircraft power, radar, laser, automotive, or electric-vehicle power systems.
• Project management experience and familiarity with MS Project or Smartsheet.
