TL;DR
Thermal Engineer II (Aerospace): Supporting the design, modeling, testing, and operation of thermal control systems for spacecraft, lunar landers, rovers, and surface power systems with an accent on thermal-fluid analysis, hardware integration, and thermal vacuum testing. Focus on building thermal models, validating component performance, supporting cleanroom assembly and TVAC campaigns, and providing real-time mission operations support.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA, United States; hybrid with regular on-site presence required

What you will do

  • Support the design, integration, testing, and operation of thermal control systems for spacecraft, lunar landers, lunar rovers, surface power systems, and related space hardware.
  • Create conceptual and detailed designs for spacecraft thermal system components and hardware.
  • Build and run component and spacecraft thermal models to guide design and operational decisions.
  • Help define specifications for vendor-supplied components and validate their performance.
  • Support cleanroom spacecraft assembly and in-house and external thermal vacuum testing.
  • Train in mission operations procedures and provide real-time mission operations support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar Engineering with two years of thermal technology experience, or a Master’s degree with related thermal experience.
  • Proficient understanding of thermal-fluid engineering fundamentals and the ability to create or apply tools for hardware design and performance prediction.
  • Experience with thermal-fluid system design and analysis software such as Thermal Desktop, Ansys Thermal, or Amesim.
  • Proficiency in analytical or scientific programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Matlab, or Fortran.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, including technical reports and presentations.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and eligible to obtain required export authorizations under ITAR and EAR.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in CAD, preferably SolidWorks, and lifecycle management tools.
  • Experience with TVAC testing, computational fluid dynamics using Ansys FLUENT or CFX, and space or lunar systems.
  • Experience taking a concept from initial design through final product.
  • Experience designing or analyzing heaters, sensors, radiators, multi-layer insulation, coatings, heat pipes, and related thermal hardware.
