Reporter (Public Safety)

Location: Longmont, Colorado; must live in the Boulder County area or be willing to relocate. No relocation assistance is offered. The role includes occasional driving between assignment sites, in-person training sessions, and meetings, as well as shift work outside normal business hours.

Salary: $18.00–$19.00 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement and a cell phone stipend.

What you will do

• Cover police and fire departments, courts, and general assignment or breaking news for web and print.
• Produce rapid digital briefs as well as daily and enterprise stories.
• Build a loyal audience and develop a social media presence focused on public safety news.
• Use social media, search engine optimization, and new digital tools to expand content reach.
• Generate fresh story ideas for the Times-Call and sister newspapers.
• Work effectively under deadline pressure and contribute to a collaborative newsroom culture.

Requirements

• 1–2 years of reporting experience at a daily newspaper or online news outlet.
• Degree in journalism, communications, or equivalent experience.
• Mastery of AP Style and experience with news reporting and writing.
• Strong storytelling abilities and a distinctive journalistic voice.
• Proficiency in social media and search engine optimization.
• Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, willingness to pass a background check and MVR check, and availability for shift work.
