TL;DR
Lead Manufacturing Engineer (Space Systems) (Aerospace Manufacturing): Engineering and optimizing factories, production lines, and manufacturing processes for rockets and spacecraft with an accent on design for manufacturability, production ramp-up, and technical investigations. Focus on leading feasibility studies, resolving systemic production issues, improving yield and build efficiency, and guiding cross-functional teams through complex manufacturing challenges.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; onsite role

Base pay range: $125,000–$170,000 USD per year, California only. Total rewards may also include equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Prepare feasibility studies and conduct manufacturing technology research and development projects.
  • Partner with design engineering to apply Design for Manufacture and improve product robustness and scalability.
  • Engineer, procure, install, validate, and optimize factories, assembly processes, production lines, and build areas.
  • Support development builds, production ramp-up, failure triage, root-cause investigations, risk mitigation, and corrective actions.
  • Own production-line performance, removing blockers, improving yield, increasing build efficiency, and driving process improvements.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives, change management, business-system improvements, and organizational efficiency efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience in manufacturing, production, or process engineering.
  • Hands-on experience solving systemic, multifaceted problems in complex manufacturing systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex assignments autonomously and coach and mentor colleagues across teams.
  • Personnel leadership experience, including employee reviews, interviewing, hiring, team goal setting, and metrics development.
  • For candidates working in U.S. offices, ITAR eligibility is required: U.S. citizenship, lawful U.S. permanent residence, qualifying refugee or asylum status, or eligibility to obtain the required government authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with environmental and production acceptance testing, including vibration, shock, thermal, and vacuum testing.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, interfaces, sensors, power supplies, oscilloscopes, serial devices, accelerometers, thermocouples, RTDs, and 4–20 mA sensors.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting production lines or build areas and transitioning products from design to production.
  • Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, Pareto analysis, root-cause analysis, and corrective action.
