Software Engineer, Embedded Linux

Location: Onsite at the San Bruno, California, United States office; 10% domestic and international travel, with extended and weekend hours when necessary.

Salary: $130,000–$180,000 annually, plus early-stage equity and access to company-sponsored benefits.

What you will do

• Bring up freshly fabricated carrier boards from power-off through reliable Linux boot, validating power, memory, and communication interfaces.
• Configure the bootloader and Linux kernel for custom hardware.
• Define custom hardware through device trees and integrate drivers for non-standard peripherals.
• Build reproducible operating-system images with Nix/NixOS and develop safe field update and rollback paths.
• Configure on-device networking and system services required by higher-level software.
• Collaborate with firmware and hardware teams to improve platform reliability, maintainability, and field serviceability.

Requirements

• BS in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• 3+ years building and shipping embedded Linux on custom hardware.
• Proven board bring-up experience from powered-off hardware to reliable boot.
• Hands-on experience with bootloaders, kernel configuration, drivers, and device trees.
• Fluency in C/C++ and embedded Linux tooling, including cross-compilation, JTAG, and serial debugging.
• Experience with CAN, SPI, I2C, or UART at the operating-system and driver level.

Nice to have

• Experience with Nix/NixOS, OS configuration as code, Yocto, or Ansible.
• Production Rust experience.
• Familiarity with ARM SoCs/SoMs on custom carrier boards.
• Background in automotive, aerospace, defense, robotics, or energy.
