Staff Engineer, Backend (Java)

Location: New York City, United States; hybrid, with four days per week in the office. No required office days during the summer and winter holidays.

Salary: $210,000–$245,000 per year in New York City, plus potential company incentive bonus.

What you will do

• Drive the technical vision and long-term strategy for the Broker Dealer organization.
• Design, build, scale, and maintain backend components that securely move millions of dollars through complex risk and compliance checks.
• Solve backend scaling, software design, system stability, and optimization challenges.
• Lead projects spanning one or more teams while balancing delivery timelines, quality, performance, and security.
• Improve engineering practices, share knowledge, and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional experience in at least one object-oriented programming language.
• 7+ years of professional experience with SQL and relational databases, including schema design and detailed queries.
• Strong command of algorithms and data structures.
• Experience scaling and optimizing large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience designing and maintaining core backend software components.
• Understanding of pragmatic software delivery, automated testing, and quality-focused engineering tradeoffs.

Nice to have

• Professional experience with Java.
• Experience leading and managing cross-team engineering projects.
