Life Skills Counselor – Part Time

Location: Patchogue, New York, United States

Salary: $22–$24 per hour based on relevant experience

New Ground is a nonprofit community organization supporting Long Island families and veterans experiencing homelessness through social work, education, housing support, and permanent supportive housing.

What you will do

• Accompany social workers on home visits and assess residents’ life skills development needs.
• Conduct ongoing visits to identify needs and establish life skills goals.
• Provide hands-on coaching in independent living, budgeting, meal planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation.
• Support home organization, cleanliness, safety, household management, schedules, mail, and chore planning.
• Help residents navigate transportation for employment, appointments, and community activities.
• Document client progress, maintain confidentiality, and collaborate with the social work and onsite program services teams.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in human services, coaching, or a related field.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with diverse populations.
• Reliable, organized, and comfortable working independently in offsite and out-of-office locations.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
