Mechanical Engineer (Defense)

Location: Onsite in San Bruno, California, United States; support for 10% domestic and international travel, extended hours, and weekend work when necessary.

Salary: $130,000–$180,000 annually, plus early-stage equity and company-sponsored benefits.

What you will do

• Own hardware subsystem design from requirements, concepts, and prototypes through series production and field deployment.
• Develop mechanical designs integrating energy storage, advanced materials, thermal solutions, power electronics, dense PCBAs, and harnessing.
• Rapidly prototype, debug, iterate, and manage technical risks, schedules, budgets, and performance targets.
• Design mechanical, thermal, electromechanical, and integrated power assemblies for volume manufacturing.
• Support customer-facing hardware demonstrations and incorporate application requirements into product development.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent work experience, with 2+ years in a technical engineering, design, or product role.
• Proven 3D CAD, CAE/FEA, and engineering drawing skills, including GD&T and ASME standards; SOLIDWORKS is preferred.
• Strong fundamentals in structures, materials, fluids, aerodynamics, thermal systems, controls, mechanics, dynamics, system modeling, and physics.
• Manufacturing and machine-shop experience, including sheet metal, CNC, lathe, casting, forging, or similar processes.
• Hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills, including machining, shop tools, welding, soldering, and 3D printing.
• Familiarity with MIL-STD, DO-160, automotive, defense, or aerospace standards; ability to work on foot in a shop and lift up to 50 lb.

Nice to have

• Experience with low- and high-voltage systems, power distribution, battery thermal management, and voltage-regulating power electronics.
• Experience with high-reliability embedded power electronics, lifecycle, abuse, and endurance testing in austere environments.
• MATLAB, SIMULINK, SIMSCAPE, ANSYS, Fluent, Abaqus, COMSOL, HyperWorks, or related CAE/FEA tools.
• Experience with LabVIEW, DAQs, CAN tools, Python, sensors, data post-processing, or product lifecycle management systems.
• Advanced design experience in CNC machining, composites, sheet metal, injection molding, or PCBA integration.
