AI Researcher (Legal AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States; on-site. Relocation assistance and visa and green card support are available for successful applicants moving to San Francisco.

Salary: $180,000–$200,000 per year

What you will do

• Own the AI research roadmap from problem identification and experiment design through prototyping and production deployment.
• Advance systems for reasoning over long-context legal corpora, contract comparison and redlining, information extraction, automated drafting, and document editing.
• Research hallucination detection and resolution, calibration, explainability, and grounded generation for high-stakes legal use cases.
• Apply fine-tuning, PEFT, distillation, agentic systems, long-context modeling, and reasoning techniques to improve model accuracy, speed, and cost.
• Build datasets, benchmarks, evaluation infrastructure, and metrics for complex legal text.
• Partner with Engineering and Product to ship prototypes, document technical findings, and present results to technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent industry research experience.
• Deep hands-on experience in deep learning research and development, particularly with LLMs.
• Strong knowledge of PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow and the surrounding open-source ecosystem.
• Expertise in at least one area including agentic systems, reasoning, PEFT, quantization, inference optimization, hallucination mitigation, novel deep-learning architectures, or robust LLM evaluation.
• Evidence of exceptional ability through research, a shipped system, open-source contribution, competition result, or comparable achievement.
• Excellent communication skills and a bias toward shipping measurable, pragmatic solutions.

Nice to have

• Publications at leading ML/AI venues or equivalent strong industry research contributions.
• Experience with long-context modeling, retrieval, or grounded generation in legal, medical, or financial domains.
• Prior work on hallucination detection, calibration, or interpretability.
• Experience building from zero in fast-paced startup or research environments.
