Accounting Lead

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, on-site

Salary: $120,000–$165,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including the general ledger, reconciliations, accruals, chart of accounts, and financial statements.
• Build and operate procurement, accounts payable, expense, and fixed-asset processes for laboratory, hardware, equipment, and facilities spending.
• Establish technical accounting policies for R&D spending, leases, prepaids, accruals, equity, and stock-based compensation.
• Develop pragmatic controls, maintain audit readiness, and lead the external auditor relationship and financing diligence support.
• Own and improve finance systems and integrations across Rillet, Ramp, Procurify, Rippling, Carta, and external-provider workflows.
• Prepare leadership, board, and investor reporting; manage budgeting inputs; and oversee outsourced finance partners and service standards.

Requirements

• Deep command of GAAP, accounting close, financial reporting, controls, and auditability.
• End-to-end ownership of accounting processes in a fast-growing startup or similarly dynamic environment.
• Experience operating at Accounting Lead, Head of Accounting, Assistant Controller, Controller, or comparable scope.
• Strong judgment and first-principles reasoning, with the ability to explain accounting decisions and tradeoffs to non-financial stakeholders.
• Clear communication with scientists, engineers, operators, executives, auditors, and vendors.
• Hands-on use of AI tools to automate repetitive work, build checks, improve reconciliations, analyze data, or create finance tools.

Nice to have

• CPA and Big Four or public-accounting experience.
• Experience in biotech, life sciences, deep tech, robotics, hardware, AI research, advanced manufacturing, or another R&D- and CapEx-intensive environment.
• Experience scaling an accounting function as an early finance hire.
• Experience with equity or stock-based compensation accounting, financing-round audit support, and outsourced accounting, tax, or payroll partners.
• Finance-system implementation, automation, data analysis, SQL, or experience building AI automations, agents, and finance tools.
