Data Center Mechanical Engineer

Location: Remote-friendly, United States; staff are expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time. Travel to data center sites across the region may reach approximately 30%.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design direction for data center cooling plants, chilled-water distribution, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
• Review design drawings, specifications, equipment selections, submittals, shop drawings, and construction documentation from external engineering partners.
• Drive modular delivery through cooling skids, prefabricated piping and pump assemblies, and offsite manufacturing strategies.
• Coordinate developers, engineering consultants, construction partners, equipment vendors, and supply chain teams across the U.S. portfolio.
• Conduct technical due diligence, site visits, installation reviews, field issue resolution, testing, and commissioning.
• Maintain mechanical design standards and ensure facilities meet requirements for reliability, efficiency, scalability, and increasing rack densities.

Requirements

• 10+ years designing mechanical systems for data centers or other mission-critical facilities through design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
• Deep knowledge of U.S. mechanical, plumbing, fire, building, energy, piping, and ASHRAE standards, including IMC, IPC, IECC, IBC, NFPA 13, ASME B31, and ASHRAE TC 9.9.
• Strong experience with chilled-water systems, air-cooled cooling plants, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, CDUs, and redundant piping configurations.
• Hands-on experience with prefabricated and modular mechanical infrastructure and offsite manufacturing.
• Experience directing external engineering consultants and reviewing construction drawings, P&IDs, and single-line diagrams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant education, training, or experience; a PE license or eligibility is valued but not required.

Nice to have

• 15+ years of data center or mission-critical mechanical design experience.
• Experience delivering data centers in multiple U.S. markets, including Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, or Oregon.
• Experience with thermal-hydraulic, CFD, or energy analysis tools such as AFT Fathom, Cadence 6SigmaET, or ANSYS.
• Familiarity with controls and BAS systems, facility audits, TCO analyses, Revit MEP, or AutoCAD MEP.
