Airframe Manufacturing Leader (Aerospace): Building Astro Mechanica’s supersonic aircraft through hands-on composite airframe manufacturing with an accent on establishing facilities, tooling, workflows, and technician teams. Focus on translating engineering designs into build plans, leading layup and bonding operations, and delivering flight hardware safely and efficiently.

Location: San Francisco; on-site five days a week

Salary: $165K–$210K annually

What you will do

  • Build the airframe manufacturing function from the ground up, including facilities, workflows, tooling concepts, and technician teams.
  • Own daily in-house manufacturing operations for composite structures and airframe assemblies.
  • Translate engineering drawings, analyses, requirements, ply books, and CAD models into executable manufacturing plans.
  • Lead and mentor composite technicians and fabricators while maintaining a hands-on shop-floor presence.
  • Supervise layup, bonding, curing, trimming, assembly, repair, rework, and inspection activities.
  • Establish work instructions, build sequences, tooling approaches, process documentation, and quality practices.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in high-mix, low-volume composite manufacturing, prototyping, or airframe fabrication, preferably in aerospace or defense.
  • Hands-on expertise in prepreg layup, wet layup, bonding, curing, trimming, repair, metallic materials, and composite-to-metal interfaces.
  • Experience building or scaling manufacturing operations, laboratories, or shops for development or flight hardware.
  • Ability to lead and mentor technicians while staying engaged in technical details.
  • Familiarity with aerospace quality standards, inspection practices, and documentation for flight and test hardware.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Francisco five days per week.
