Search Software Engineer (Python)

Location: South Africa; fully remote with the option to visit the office.

What you will do

• Maintain and improve the search technology stack, including solutions based on platforms such as Elasticsearch, Solr, Algolia, OpenSearch, or similar providers.
• Design and build high-scale solutions that improve customer experience and support business users.
• Architect complex solutions, contribute to cross-engineering architecture proposals, and align technical direction across the organisation.
• Develop robust production code, REST and RPC APIs in Python, and automated tests.
• Respond to production bugs, alerts, and incidents, including rotational after-hours support for critical issues.
• Investigate issues affecting multiple teams, improve engineering practices, and share knowledge through documentation, talks, workshops, and blog posts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, Advanced Diploma, or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5–10 years of experience in software development.
• Professional experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch, Vertex AI Search, Solr, Algolia, OpenSearch, Meilisearch, or Typesense.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and analytical problem-solving.
• Proficiency in Python or another strongly typed open-source language, with experience writing efficient production code.
• Experience with RESTful APIs, web services, SQL databases, and Linux development environments.

Nice to have

• Microservices and Agile development experience.
• MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MS SQL; Memcached or Redis.
• Message brokers, queues, PubSub systems, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
• Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub, Travis CI, or Jenkins.
• AWS, GCP, Azure, JavaScript, React, or jQuery.
