TL;DR
Lead Safety Systems Engineer (Robotics): Defining and implementing safety architectures and validation frameworks for autonomous heavy machinery with an accent on hazard analysis, fail-safe behavior, and human-machine interaction. Focus on building safety cases, designing verification and validation strategies across simulation and field testing, and analyzing fleet safety data to improve deployed systems.

Location: Seattle, United States

Company

hirify.global develops autonomous heavy machinery by combining robotics, software, hardware, and mission-critical infrastructure for construction jobsites.

What you will do

  • Define system-level safety architectures across hardware, software, control systems, and multiple machine platforms.
  • Design redundancy, fault detection, safe-state transitions, degraded operating modes, watchdog systems, safety controllers, and emergency-stop architectures.
  • Develop and maintain the system safety case, including traceability from hazards and requirements to mitigations and validation evidence.
  • Lead hazard analysis using FMEA, HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis, and STPA, and define operational design domains for terrain, weather, visibility, proximity, and human presence.
  • Define safe human-machine interaction, operator override mechanisms, safety perimeters, and machine-state communication.
  • Establish verification, validation, fleet safety observability, incident analysis, and continuous-learning frameworks for deployed autonomous machines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience designing or validating safety-critical systems.
  • Experience with FMEA, HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis, or STPA.
  • Strong understanding of hardware-software system integration and verification and validation strategies for complex systems.
  • Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams with strong analytical and communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Safety architecture experience for autonomous systems, robotics platforms, heavy machinery, industrial robotics, automotive, or aerospace systems.
  • Experience with ISO 17757, ISO 19014, ISO 13849, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or SOTIF.
  • Experience with human-robot interaction safety, fleet telemetry, system observability, regulatory processes, or certification.

Culture & Benefits

  • Ownership of safety architecture across the autonomy stack and deployed fleet.
  • Collaboration across robotics, software, hardware, machine learning, engineering, and operations.
  • Competitive compensation and equity.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), and life insurance.
  • Opportunity to see safety systems operate on autonomous machines deployed worldwide.
