Principal Mechanical Engineer

Location: Bedford, Massachusetts, United States; travel to suppliers and customers may be required, up to 10% of the time.

What you will do

• Advance new product designs from concept through customer acceptance and volume production as part of a cross-disciplinary development team.
• Define system-level requirements, decompose systems into subsystems, and develop practical solutions focused on manufacturability and maintainability.
• Design, release, prototype, test, and verify components and systems using SolidWorks and PLM systems.
• Produce bills of material, fabrication and assembly drawings, maintenance instructions, test plans, reports, and other technical documentation.
• Collaborate with customers, suppliers, machinists, contract manufacturers, and engineering operations to deliver tested systems to customer facilities.
• Perform reliability, structural, vibration, thermal, motor torque, bearing life, design-for-manufacture, design-for-assembly, cost-reduction, and tolerance analyses; oversee design and test work by junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Eight or more years of related experience with an original equipment manufacturer, including successful product launches into volume manufacturing.
• Mastery of 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, including 2D drawings, simulations, and PDM.
• Significant experience designing motion control systems with sensors, actuators, and complex mechanisms.
• Significant experience designing industrial systems while balancing cost and durability across the capital equipment’s full depreciation lifespan.
• Experience with structural and vibration analyses, ASME drafting standards including GD&T (Y14.5-2009), DFM/A, Six Sigma, statistical tolerance analysis, DFMEA, PFMEA, and fault tree analysis.
• Experience working with customers, component suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
• Ability to set aggressive but feasible schedules and milestones, manage technical risks, and address safety, design, manufacturing, reliability, and mitigation considerations.
• High-level technical writing proficiency for specifications, test plans, reports, and white papers.

Nice to have

• Ability to handle minimal electrical design, including cable harnesses, wiring diagrams, and grounding strategies.
• Strong working knowledge of neighboring engineering disciplines, including wire routing, strain management, and cabinet placement.
