Clinical Veterinarian (Avian and Laboratory Animal Medicine)

Location: Dallas, TX, United States; relocation assistance is available. Extensive domestic travel and some international travel, approximately 30%, are required.

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Provide clinical oversight and comprehensive medical care for avian species, rodent colonies, and small mammal research animals.
• Lead diagnostics, case management, preventative medicine, colony health monitoring, emergency response, and critical care.
• Design and perform anesthesia, sedation, monitoring, recovery, and surgical procedures in hospital, field, and research environments.
• Build clinical systems from the ground up, including SOPs, pharmaceutical inventory, controlled-drug tracking, emergency protocols, and necropsy workflows.
• Advise on veterinary hospital design, IACUC-compliant animal housing, equipment selection, and activation of new facilities.
• Collaborate with animal care, research, genetics, facilities, external specialists, and the Chief Animal Officer.

Requirements

• DVM or VMD from an AVMA-accredited institution.
• At least 10 years of clinical veterinary experience, including meaningful experience in avian medicine, laboratory animal medicine, rodent colonies, and small mammals.
• Demonstrated expertise in avian medicine and surgery, advanced anesthesia, emergency care, and critical care.
• Working knowledge of research compliance, IACUC frameworks, biosecurity, zoonotic disease prevention, and applicable animal-health regulations.
• DEA licensure or the ability to obtain it.
• Ability to build protocols and clinical infrastructure independently in a dynamic growth-stage environment.

Nice to have

• Board certification in Avian Practice or Laboratory Animal Medicine, or advanced specialty training.
• Experience with novel, emerging, complex, or conservation-focused species programs.
• Experience establishing or scaling an early-stage veterinary program.
• Familiarity with ratites, psittacines, passerines, avian reproductive medicine, artificial insemination, or egg-management protocols.
